Gordin (I always spelled his name wrong- probably the first time by mistake but I kept it up for decades just to annoy him) was my main scientific mentor. The lessons I learned from him at Lincoln's Inn Fields stayed with me to the present day and I have passed many of them on to subsequent generations. If Gordin had not been so supportive, I would likely not have completed my PhD and fos would have another name. I do remember being really pissed off when Gordin gave me edits on the drafts of my first paper. He wrote in tiny, but neat, red letters between all the lines. The thing that bothered me most was that he was absolutely spot on with every single comment. After eating humble pie I tried my best to emulate his style for the rest of my career. I will never forget the lesson he gave me about split infinitives. It included the latin background and the following quote from Star Trek "To boldly go ..." Should really be "To go boldly ...". Because of this I removed all split infinities from every paper I co-wrote. Gordin was a true scholar, gentleman, friend and mentor.
