I was a postdoc in Gordon´s lab from 1998 to 2001. To me he was a great mentor and an excellent scientist. He enjoyed discussing results and talking about Science. But he shared more than his knowledge and ideas with the members of the lab: He used to have a couple of pints with us at the “Georges the IV” pub on Fridays; he danced with us at the annual retreats at Warwick University, he played crocket with us in his garden… Gordon used to share with us his memories of what it was like to do research in the “old times”, of his experiences as a postdoc in USA, of his youth in Scotland… He shared with us his joys and worries as a father and even his existentialist doubts. We admired Gordon as a scientist and we loved him because he was a kind, generous person it was great to be around with. We met again less than three years ago to wish Gordon a happy retirement. I had imagined Gordon enjoying long years ahead spending lots of time with his family, becoming an expert gardener, and watching his daughters become wonderful women. I feel very sorry all this was robbed from him and from them. I feel very sorry they had to endure his long, terrible disease. Alison, Katherin and Annabel, I wish I could bring some solace to you. Gordon will always be in my memory.
